My Artist Statement
"Creativity takes courage" (Henri Matisse). I make my artwork because it is fun and calming, I make it by utilizing handbuilding techniques that I've learned over the years, because art means everything to me. With the conclusion of my third year in pottery, I am sad to say that I cannot move on to Pottery 4. However, I aim to pursue my hobby in college. Thank you Mrs. Abney for everything you have taught me!
I was introduced to art as a child in elementary school. I remember making art in the 4th and 5th grade at Greenland Pines. My first time making anything with pottery was a fish. I loved going to the art room and we made small fish out of pottery that fit in a little stand so they wouldn't fall over. I had the best time; the trick was not to snap off the little fish mouth. My motivation to make art is to better my hand-eye coordination and to have a hobby that I enjoy. I would like to keep improving my techniques and be the very best I can be. Art is very fun and therapeutic. I enjoy just sitting down and making a piece with clay.
At school I use clay to make most of my art, but in my journal I use pens, pencils, and paints. To make pottery I use a rib, a banding wheel, sometimes a potter's wheel, water, slip, a needle tool, and the most important, I use my hands. I utilize handbuilding techniques such as pinching, rolling coils, and using slabs. My favorite is rolling coils because I find it easy and satisfying to roll out a coil to attach to a pot. I usually make clay bowls or vases. I enjoy the functionality of bowls and vases and how large they can get. One of my most recent coil pots won an award and I couldn't be more ecstatic.
Most importantly, my art means everything to me. I love how art can transfer you to another place when you are making something, just as a book does. Making art is very relaxing and calming to me and can always put me into a good mood. I want my audience to see how much work I put into my art so they can understand how much I enjoy it. I am very passionate about art and my audience can tell by my amount of effort I put into my artwork.
Making art is one of my favorite things to do. I make it through handbuilding techniques, and my art is one of the most important things to me. Although throughout my experiences of making art I have messed up and made mistakes, I have always kept going and not given up. "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep." (Anonymous)
